South Shore Manufacturing LLC has been involved in the surfing industry since 1968. Throughout the years we found our company consistently evolving to meet the needs of our customers and the industry. Jerry Mowe, the owner of South Shore MFG envisioned a multidiscipline company offering more than just surfboards to the industry. He spanned into not only South Shore Manufacturing, but to his very own custom brands of surfboards under the South Shore brand name. In 1972 he even had professional surfers competing on the professional surfing circuit. He developed Newport Foam Blanks and then South Shore Foam Blanks. Along with South Shore glassing factories in Costa Mesa and Tustin California and in Powers Oregon. Also opened South Shore Newport a retail location Newport Beach, California. Furthermore South Shore MFG and its private label surfboard program contracted and manufactured surfboards and sailboards for major surfing related company's all over the world in the 70’s and 80’s.
Flexpad Professional Sanding Products came along originally for use in our own factory. The development of the product over the years has really been profound. We have been working first hand with craftsman to create a ground up 100% custom built sanding pad. It started with the development of the first sanding pads in 1976 and has literally been micro-developed ever since.
Flexpad Professional Sanding Products is proudly manufactured in Powers Oregon.
TIME LINE 2005: The Softie shaping pad
The Blue Softie FLEXPAD was developed specifically as a tool designed to finish shape machined surfboard blanks. Constructed of extremely soft foam and used by shapers all over the world it is a time saver in the shaping room.
TIME LINE 2006: 6" sanding pad
The 6" FLEXPAD was developed to offer a smaller version of the 8" sanding pad available in cloth face and Velcro hook 5/8-11 and 14mm hub.
TIME LINE 2008:
The original Balsa shaping block with a detachable velcro foam pad was developed to use a 9x11 full sheet of sandpaper or sandscreen.
TIME LINE 2009: Development of a new type sanding pad
With the introduction of this new FLEXPAD design comes a change in surfboard sanding tools for 2009. If you have sanded using a FLEXPAD in the past, you know how true they run. My challenge was to make them last longer under heaver workloads and at varying RPM levels. I developed a multi-layer foam combination using high pressure molding and a new flexible hard shell foam that I formulated. The hard shell white foam on top of the pads transfers the cutting edge and the flex point more towards the outside of the pad. This results in less stress on the center area and extends the life of the pad. After months of testing, I received very positive feedback. I guarantee you will not be disappointed with it's performance.
TIME LINE 2014: The White Hard and Yellow Soft shaping block
Midget Farrelly asked me if I could create some new shaping blocks made from FLEXPAD foam and utilizing a Velcro hook fastening system size 4 1/2 x 11. The result is the white hard and the very flexible Yellow soft shaping block. They are molded to create a long lasting block that holds it's shape.
